[The added title only warms Taryon towards Dan Heng. So he's a "Ser" now, is that it? He's come off as a noble knight? What an amazing first impression he gives if someone new addresses him so politely. The possibility that it's something Dan Heng does for everyone doesn't occur to him — the Darringtons weren't true nobles, only wealthy businesspeople with aspirations to join the most upper of classes.
Taryon holds himself a little higher as he takes his spot on the side of the table opposite his client and reaches out for the spear with both hands. He holds it closer to his face.] Oh wow...this is beautiful. [His fingers trace the design under the head of the spear.] This is a piece of art! Who made this, a legendary weaponsmith?
[The spear is set on the workbench with the care given to a relic, and he quickly puts in his gloves.]
I've worked on things like this before. What are you thinking of doing to it? More magic, maybe add a spell you can activate once a day? Actually — sorry for going to fast, but what does it do?
[Taryon's pictures on the network looked knightly! Like from books Dan Heng had as a child! And the man is quite polite so he does not feel incorrect in his title inference. (Oh good backstory for me to know though...oho)
Dan Heng smiles quietly when Taryon admires Cloud-Piercer. A masterpiece from lifetimes ago. The jade edges remain sharp as ever.] It is. It's been my companion for my entire life... [And even before.
Dan Heng pauses at the question of the weapon's maker, his heart constricting with a grief he cannot claim as his own. ] ...His name was Yingxing. An arrogant man, with a scarred heart, and something to prove. And...a dear friend. [He doesn't have to specify whose, since it's...so very complicated.]
The people where I'm from are extremely long lived. Yingxing...was human. [Was.] And yet, in his short allotted years, he accomplished much, and was indeed a galaxy renowned blacksmith. He made many weapons wielded by heroes- [and now...enemies. He couldn't have known. None of them did.] -of the Xianzhou Luofu, and progressed our automaton technology to incredible levels to protect us from the abominations of the Abundance.
[The corner of his mouth quirks up a little, full of bittersweet melancholy, and yet of fondness.] I think he would have loved to "talk shop" with you, Ser Darrington. Magic and enchantments were not his strong-suit. [Dan Heng doesn't know how he knows this. He's learning to not question it, lest he spiral into existential dread.
Dan Heng follows along with the suggestions with rapt attention, then pauses at the last question.] No apologies necessary. As for what it does; it's...hard to say, since it's been with me for so long. But I believe it offers me greater speed when I fight, and slows enemies down when they're struck. [He taps the orb of energy embedded in the spearhead, and it seems to want to follow his finger.] It acts as a...focus for my cloudhymn magic, making water easier to call upon. But I also throw the spear sometimes, and it's...difficult to get it back manually. Is there a way to enchant it to just return to my hand? Or...I don't know what sort of magics you can craft with.
[There's nothing odd about a spear being referred to as Dan Heng's companion; sometimes, objects of metal have great sentimental value, whether they are beautiful weapons or a robot assistant. His gloved fingers trace the design, marveling at the finesse required to carve this.
Taryon idly listens to Dan Heng speak of this brilliant friend, but at hearing of him in past tense, that he was a short-lived human. He was an artificer, albeit one that didn't focus often on infusions, but all that skill was transferred to building automatons.
He rests the spear on the table.] This...Yingxing...he sounds like someone I'd like to work with. We could have taught each other something. I'd like to know more about those automatons that don't run on magic.
[Robots, he means. He understands the basics of the roombas, but he's more familiar with their enchantments than with the electronics that power and command them.]
I'll do what I can to honor this gift from your friend. [He turns to face Dan Hent, mind already racing with the clear request he's been given.] So, with retriving it, the power of the spell depends on how heavy the spear is. Something that's lightweight would be easy, but this is a pretty hefty weapon. [There are many spells he can think of that could help: telekinesis, magnetism, but that would also depend on Dan Heng's mental abilities.] What if we had some sort of bracer that would call the spear back? So it has the same target every time instead of having to adjust to wherever you want to summon it?
